Over 90's Party Planned at San Marcos Senior Center

The San Marcos Senior Center is having their annual "Over 90's Party" on Tuesday, June 5. This special celebrationis is held every year to honor seniors who are over the age of 90. This is a special occasion, and if you are over 90 or know of someone who is, please call and reserve a place for this event. Entertainment will be from 10:45am to 11:15am, and lunch will be served at 11:30. Usually there is a great turnout, and in the past the celebration has even included a few people over the age of 100.

Coastal Communities Concert Band Presents Pops Concert

The Annual Encinitas Pops Concert, the second by the Coastal Communities Concert (CCC) Band to be presented in the new facility in Encinitas, will be called "A Celebration of America," with vocalist Michael Ruhl. The award-winning CCC Band will perform patriotic selections, music from both Broadway and Hollywood, marches, and swing music of the Big Bands, including a new arrangement by Sammy Nestico "A Disney Salute, written especially for the CCC Band.

In addition, students recommended by their band directors from the San Dieguito Union High School District, will join the band on several selections, and scholarships will be awarded to the top students to further their music studies.

The concert will be held on Sunday, June 3, at 2pm, at the Encinitas Community & Senior Center Auditorium, Balour at Encinitas Blvd., next to Oak Crest Middle School. Ruben Galvan, FOX 6, to Host Peoples Choice Awards

The Peoples Choice Awards are coming to downtown Escondido and you are invited to walk the red carpet. There will be pre-parties, post-parties, limousines, an exquisite dinner, and an unbelieveable show. Join Host, Ruben Galvan from FOX 6 as he hosts the First Annual "Peoples Choice Awards." Watch community leaders and friends as they come out on stage to present these prestigious awards to those who have made a positive impact on Downtown in 2006. Annual Spring Soiree Planned for CSUSM

The Center ARTES at Cal State San Marcos "Annual Spring Soiree" will be Sunday, June 3, from 3pm-5pm, at the home of Bob and Catherine Goldsmith, 6676 Las Arboledas, in the Rancho Del Lago community, Rancho Santa Fe. Hors d'oeuvres and sparkling refreshments will be served. There will be a special performance by Center ARTES Executive Director Dr. Merryl Goldberg and CSUSM professors Bill Bradbury, Eduardo Garcia and Richard Hunt. A donation of $25/person is requested. Tri-City Anime Club for Kids

This club meets the first Friday of each month (next one is June 1), from 3:30-5pm at the Vista Branch Library, 700 Eucalyptus Avenue, Vista. It is co-sponsored by the Vista Library and the San Diego County Library, Children's Programs. The Club is open to all ages, but geared toward kids ages 8-18. Bring $1 to join the Club; the monthly meetings are free. Dr. Lisa Shaffer to Speak at Democratic Club Meeting

The Lake San Marcos Democratic Club will meet Saturday, June 2, at 12:30pm at the Lakeside Pavilion, 1105 La Bonita Dr., San Marcos.

The speaker will be Dr. Lisa Shaffer, Executive Director of the UC San Diego campus-wide Environment and Sustainability Initiative and the Assistant Director of Scripps Institute of Oceanography, responsible for Program Development and International Relations. Dr. Shaffer worked in a variety of positions in Washington, DC, before joining Scripps in 1998. Last year she participated in a training program with Al Gore to be a part of the Climate Project and to give the Inconvenient Truth presentation to community groups.

Whelan Lake Bird Walk Held Monthly

The Whelan Lake bird walk, a premier birding location not open to the public, is held on the first Saturday of every month at 8:00am, and sponsored by the Buena Vista Audubon Society. Birding by sight and sound with the experts. Directions: I-5 to Hwy. 76; East on Hwy 76 to Douglas Drive. Turn left on Douglas and continue to the traffic light at North River Road. Turn left and meet at the end of the cul-de-sac by entrance gate. The leader is John Haddock, and for information, call him at 760.941.7824.

Contemporary Women Raise Money for Casa de Amparo

A local women's volunteer organization, Contemporary Women of North County, recently participated in the Meet the Chefs of Del Mar event at the Del Mar Hilton, helping to raise thousands of dollars for one of CWONC's favorite charities, Casa de Amparo. Proceeds will go directly to Casa de Amparo, a nonprofit agency caring for abandoned, abused and neglected children in San Diego County. CWONC also participates in the Crystal Ball fundraiser on behalf of Casa de Amparo, and have their own annual holiday party for the children in residence. Daughters of the American Revolution Welcome New Members

At a recent meeting, the Rincon Del Diablo Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, welcomed five new members. The ladies have been able to prove their lineage back to a patriot of the American Revolution, which is a requirement for membership.

DAR is open to women who can demonstrate that their ancestor provided active service in the cause for American independence, either by serving in the military or in some other significant role. Women interested in joining DAR can receive help from the chapter in researching their lineage. The chapter meets in Escondido, and has members from San Marcos, Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Valley Center, Ramona, and Julian. For information, call 760.744.7530.

New Girls Choir To Hold Open House

The new "San Diego A Cappella Girls Ensemble," directed by Becky Rash, owner, with husband, Ken, of Active Audio and Entertainment, is holding an Open House on Tuesday, June 5, from 7:00-8:00pm, at Music for Kids, 16475 Bernardo Center Drive, Rancho Bernardo. It is open to anyone interested in learning more about the choir, witness a rehearsal, and for prospective members to learn what the choir is all about. Light refreshments will be served.

The choir began rehearsing May 1, and is a great opportunity for girls ages 11-17 to participate in a music program. They meet once a week, with each rehearsal focusing on music theory, ear training, improvisation, sight singing, and preparation of repertoire. The repertoire is all a cappella (without accompainment) in various genres, ranging from jazz, contemporary, classical, gospel, and world. The first public performance will be in August.
