The California National Guard Education Assistance Award Program
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)
With a looming legislative deadline quickly approaching, my bill to create a California National Guard Education Assistance Award Program died in the Senate Appropriations Committee last week. This legislation would have funded tuition, fees and books for eligible National Guard members.
California is one of the few states that does not offer an educational benefit to National Guard members. I felt it was appropriate to correct this disservice. These brave men and women are the ones we call upon to serve their state in times of both California and nationwide disasters. Extending this benefit to them would be one of the small ways this state could show our sincere gratitude for their patriotism and sacrifice.
I hope that throughout budget negotiations, leadership takes it upon themselves to make room for this program that helps California National Guard members attain the important education that they deserve.
