4th of July Blood Drive Seeks Donors
The Kiwanis Club of San Marcos is seeking blood donors for its' 5th Annual Blood Drive on Tuesday, July 4th. The San Diego Blood Bank Bloodmobile will be in the parking lot of Woodland Park Bible Church, 1093 Woodland Parkway, San Marcos, from 11am to 4:30pm. Donors can pre-register for appointments by calling the Kiwanis Call Center at 471-3201, or online at www.sandiegobloodbank.org using the sponsor code KCSM. Each donor will receive a complimentary BBQ lunch from the Kiwanis Club and a certificate for a free Hornblower Cruise.
"We can't think of anything more patriotic than helping save someone's life by donating blood on the 4th of July," said Carrie Clevers, Kiwanis secretary and blood drive chairman. "This has become one of our club's most important events and we look forward to exceeding last year's total of 55 registered donors."
In addition to the blood drive, the Kiwanis Club will provide a BBQ at the church. Tickets are $5/adults and $3/children under 12. The church will provide free games and entertainment by local bands from 1-5pm. Attendees are encouraged to dress in 4th of July clothing. Judging will be done by local firemen, sheriff deputies and city council members. The renowned 50-member symphonic Pacific Coast Concert Band will provide a free concert from 5-7pm. Grand Opening Held for New County Buildings

Friday, June 23, was the official grand opening and dedication of the new County buildings on the south side of Hwy. 78, just east of Twin Oaks Valley Road, on Carmel Street adjacent to the Hampton Inn. These new buildings house the San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk; Treasurer, Tax Collector; and the Departments of Planning and Land Use and Environmental Health, which were formerly on Via Vera Cruz, by Restaurant Row.
Gregory Smith, Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk acted as MC and introduced other dignitaries in attendance including Supervisor Bill Horn; Walter Ekard, County Chief Administrative Officer; Dan McAllister, Treasurer-Tax Collector; Chandra Wallar, DCAO, Land Use and Environment Group; Corky Smith, Mayor of San Marcos, Pia Harris, Councilmember; Rick Gittings, City Manager; and Paul Malone, Assistant City Manager, in addition to other county employees and the engineers and contractors for the facilities.
Lake San Marcos Democratic Club Meeting Planned
On Saturday, July 8, the LSM Democratic Club will meet at the lakeside Pavilion, 1105 La Bonita Drive, Lake San Marcos. The meeting will start at 12:30pm (note change of time).
The speaker, Fernando Suarez Del Solar, has founded the Guerrero Azteca Peace Project as a result of the loss of his son who was killed in the Iraq War. He will discuss what he has done to promote peace and social justice in our communities. The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call Betty Ball at 752-1035.
Escondido Chamber Honored Members at Awards Dinner
Last week the Escondido Chamber held "A Return Engagement," their annual installation and awards dinner at the Orfila Vineyards in Escondido. Awards "of the year" were presented to Mark Baker, Business Leader; Jack Raymond, the Jim Felix Award, Community Volunteer; the Escondido Children's Museum took Community Organization; Palomar Medical Center, Large Business; Brecht Enterprises, Mid-size Business; Acacia Animal Hopital, Small Business; Dr. Randy Jungman and Julie Kangas, Entrepreneur; Tom Hogarty, Board Member, and Denette Stewart, Rookie Board Member of the Year, and Ambassador of the Year went to Sandra Kay Culbert.
Kevin Svetich, CLU, was honored as the outgoing chairman and Les Abshire as incoming chairman, and new officers and board members were installed.
Escondido History Center Schedules

At their recent 50th Annual Meeting the History Center held elections of Board Members Dick Althouse, Vivian Doering, Frank Lorey, and Gil Turrentine; and presented the 2006-2007 officers and returning board members: President, Gil Turrentine; Vice President, Bob Johnson; Secretary, Allene Robinson; and Treasurer, Ruth Thomas.
